Quick answers for the stuff nobody teaches you.

Pull the filter out and read the numbers printed on the cardboard edge — that's the nominal size (e.g. 14x20x1). Common sizes are 16x25x1, 20x25x1, and 16x20x1. If the print has worn off, measure length x width x thickness and round to the nearest inch. Many homes have two or more returns in different sizes, so check every vent.

Replace every 3 months (every 1–2 months with pets or allergies).

Fridge filters are matched to the model number printed inside the fridge door or on the filter cap. RO systems usually stack a sediment filter, one or two carbon filters, and the membrane — each on its own schedule.

Fridge filter: every 6 months. RO pre-filters: every 6–12 months. RO membrane: every 2 years.

Range hood mesh filters and dishwasher drain filters are washable — degreaser and hot water bring them back. Pleated paper filters (HVAC, fridge, RO, vacuum HEPA) are never washable; water destroys the media and pushes debris deeper.

Clean range hood filters monthly. Clean the dishwasher drain filter monthly.

Press the test button on every smoke and CO detector until it sounds. Any detector older than 10 years (check the manufacture date on the back) should be replaced outright, even if it still chirps. Smart lock batteries fade quietly — swap them on a schedule instead of waiting for a lockout.

Test detectors every 6 months. Replace smart lock batteries every 3 months.

Weekly: floors, bathrooms, sheets. Monthly: dishwasher drain filter, range hood, baseboards. Every 3 months: HVAC filter, fridge coils, showerheads. Every 6 months: detectors, dryer vent, gutters. Yearly: HVAC service, water heater flush, deep carpet clean.
